How to meditate yourself into an authentic business vision?

How to meditate is something that should be taught in schools not only at a young age but in higher educational institutions as well. Learning basic meditation tools and methods is something that we can apply not only in our spiritual development but also in how we approach our professional life, especially when launching and running our own businesses.

Irrelevant to where you are on your journey, you can only benefit from incorporating meditation tools in all areas of your life. Either you are feeling confused, lost, depressed, excited, energized or simply curious to develop further, practising meditation regularly will only accelerate your growth both spiritually and in business as well.

it all starts in the mind

One of the key ingredients to a successful business is to have well-thought out plans and strategies in place which are being regularly reviewed and adjusted if necessary. Having achievements in your personal life follows the same principle: when you know where you are going, it’s easier to figure out the road to get there. To be able to plan, visualise and manifest successfully, you need to be in a mental state that allows you to think clearly, to see the bigger picture, and to have excellent problem solving skills. Meditation is a great tool to help achieve such mental state and mindset as it has numerous positive benefits on your mental and physical well being.

Practising meditation regularly helps you:

Meditate in business the key benefits

In addition to these 2 major benefits, you will also likely to become more focused, sleep better, have an improved memory when you meditate daily just to mention a few key points. The findings of numerous scientific studies around meditation and mindfulness are very clear: it changes how your brain functions which has an overall positive impact on your physical well-being as well.

Can you guess what happens when you are in a much better, healthier state mentally and physically? This is not a tricky question, I’m sure you know the answer already. By consciously allocating time to meditate frequently, you will see an improved clarity when you are coming up for strategies and goals for your spiritual business, for your personal life or even get hit by that creative spark to come up with a brand new direction for your career. When you have an authentic business vision that is in line with your spiritual calling, your belief system and principles, the whole journey of bringing that vision into reality becomes a lot more fun.

How to find time to meditate?

Meditate woman in front of moon, spiritual business

Something I used to slip up with more often than I preferred was not having a regular time allocated to my daily meditation. There were some periods when I would spend up to 2-3 hours a day in a meditative state. This was happening during my deepest core transformation and as a result of my disciplined routine I achieved incredible things not only in my personal life but in my business life as well. I had unbelievably high energy levels, was able to focus on multiple stressful projects as a CEO and Marketing Director, exercised 4-5 times a week, read 2-3 books a month and kept on studying to accelerate my spiritual development. It was a wild ride but thanks to my dedicated meditation practice I was somehow able to manage it, until my focus shifted and I eventually burnt out.

That burn-out helped me find a better balance that worked for my mind, my body and my emotions. Find your own way that works for you. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution here. Listen to your inner compass, your intuition and figure out what is the most effective and authentic solution for you.

As you change and go through different phases in your life, your preferences and priorities will change as well.

I’m now currently not having long meditation sessions every day but I use my daily showers to consciously switch off my mind and the noise. Those 10-15 minutes of daily meditation helps me stay sane, more productive, more grounded, more aligned. Whenever I feel that I’m either facing bigger challenges or going through a tough time, I then consciously allocate more time to up my meditation.

PODCAST: How tricky is it to have balance? Guest feature on The Fit Fun Podcast

Balance has been a recurring lesson for me in the past years. Have I mastered it? No! But I’m so much better at it than how I was a few years ago. Having balance is crucial no matter where you are on your development journey.

I was super excited when Fatima K, co-founder of Fit Fun Life asked me to guest feature for a conversation that is very close to my heart: the importance of our mental well-being. In this episode we’re talking about how having balance is a major factor for our mental well-being and I’m also sharing some of my tools, techniques and mistakes (!) when I went off-balance quite a few times previously. We never stop learning, but we keep on improving. You can listen on Spotify just below or find your favourite platform right here.

Fatima K and Mateo Melichar from Fit Fun Podcast talking about having balance

What I love the most about Fit Fun Podcast is that they really focus on the process rather then the end result. We always have a beginning and an end but what happens in between? Why don’t we focus on what actually happens to get to the end result? Having a healthy balance during the process is extremely important whether you are just about to start your spiritual business or you are already working as an esoteric entrepreneur. A little while ago I had a chat with the other co-founder of Fit Fun Life (and my dear friend), Mateo Melichar, just when I was launching Connect One Marketing. It was an extremely busy time for me and my lesson about having balance was back in my life again. This time around I was juggling things in my life a lot more smoother and even managed to find the time do a podcast with Mateo (episode #15) talking about how to find our passion in our career.

Going off-balance

I used to be an overplanner and this is how I ended up going off-balance more often than I wanted to. For me getting out of my comfort zone meant breaking down the overplanned structure and learning how to let go of control a lot more. Having end goals is vital to know which direction you are going both in business and in your personal life but make sure you find a healthy balance and not overthink and over plan your days and weeks unnecessarily. The same truth needs to be applied to your business as well. Know your direction, have an end goal in mind, understand clearly how you will be working towards your collective calling but set healthy boundaries along the way.

Look at what direction you’re going into in all areas of your life? Do you have a path that you see? Define how the end result even looks like for you, for example if you want to be more spiritual, what does “being spiritual” even mean to you? If you don’t know the destination, it will be a very tough road trying to find your way there.

How often do we ask ourselves: how am I doing?

How am I doing mentally, physically and spiritually? Self-awareness is the key ingredient to ensure having a healthy balance both in your professional life and personal one. Self development is not an easy and fun ride but it is so worth it! Just remember that everything starts in the mind, so be aware of what’s going on in there.

And if you fail and go off-balance every once in a while, then don’t beat yourself up. Learning is an ongoing journey and let go of the idea of wanting to be perfect. Just be conscious about what you’re doing and realise when you are off-balance, when you are not going into the right direction, when you are not aligned. Are you truly following your spiritual calling? Is your work really fully in line with your soul’s message? If not, then it might be more difficult to find balance but once you figure out how to make a living out of your spiritual calling, the picture becomes a lot clearer.

One thing to keep in mind when finally you have your epiphany and start your own spiritual business: be conscious to become a leader without feeding the ego.

The illusion of social media: here’s why I don’t focus on growing social accounts while still reaching my target audience

While Social Media is a fantastic tool to connect with each other, to build communities, to share our thoughts and spread knowledge, it also has a darker side like everything else in this world. We live in constant duality and social media is no exception to this either. Having spent some time on working on your spiritual development, you probably realised by now how social media can be used to not only feed our ego unnecessarily but also to create an illusion world that many souls are hiding behind. It has become our new shields and walls that we build around us to conceal our authentic selves.

The same applies to many businesses on social media as well, chasing after number of likes, followers and comments to falsely believe it will generate more customers, better positioning against their competitors and overall better survival for the business in the long-term. Producing posts after posts displaying how their product is revolutionary, how their staff is having the time of their lives and whipping out the hashtags when a social issue occurs. As someone whose business is focused on strategic marketing consultancy, I shouldn’t be telling you not to focus all your efforts on growing your social media following count. However, I believe in being authentic and speaking the truth.

Facts of social media

It is way too simple to display an array of followers and make your brand “look good” by saying you have 5k, 50k or 500k followers. In reality though, how many of these people are actually interested in what you stand for? Or are they simply in for the ‘like4like’ game to feed their distorted sense of self-worth? Obviously there are some great brands and public figures out there who do have a genuine audience, don’t get me wrong. What I’m warning you against is to not fall into the trap of the illusion game on social media. You can easily grow your follower count, your likes and post engagement by investing (very little) money But I will explain why I’m recommending you against this by sharing a recent experiment.

Let me show you how I reached 14778 accounts in 7 days while spending only €25.

I took a conscious decision to keep my social media follow count lower than what you would expect from a marketing consultancy business to have. As my niche is the Spiritual and Esoteric industry, my audience has a very different profile than other industries. Having spent over 20 years journeying through my own spiritual development, it became clear to me a while ago that the only way to have a fulfilling life is to speak the truth and be authentic. After many internal battles I’ve eventually managed to apply this core value into my career as well when Connect One Marketing was born in my mind. So here comes some truth for you to help you get a better picture why it is more important to have maybe a lower follower count but the audience who is growing with you virtually is your real digital tribe.

I started planning Connect One Marketing in February 2020 and had my first 3 major projects by early April. I invested zero effort (and money) into my social accounts as my priority was to get customers first who would receive a high quality service from me. As some of my projects were calming down by July 2020, I started focusing more on content for social media to reach the people who are genuinely interested in what I could help them with. During these months I’ve also crossed paths with a wonderful soul who has become my right hand, and together we started testing what was working and what wasn’t. Testing is a crucial part when starting a new adventure especially if you haven’t done extensive market research. In my case, I did have my market research data however the world turned upside down since then and I needed to test just as well.

Fact #1 buying followers is cheap

I was approached by a “growth marketer” to offer me their services to grown my audience. Here’s my email exchange with them:

Email sample of growth marketer pitch

3500 followers for $159. I questioned how they can be sure that the increased followers are actually interested in my services and what I stand for based on my core values as mentioned earlier.

Growth marketing email sample

There are many companies and freelancers who offer similar services and the price ranges massively swing from one extreme to another. As I was not interested in increasing my follower count just to feed my ego, I decided to run a small campaign to demonstrate how efficient it can be when you are on a low budget and want to make sure that your message reaches the right audience. Understanding your real audience is key to a successful marketing strategy.

fact #2 refining your audience pays off

I selected my preferred locations (not only countries but cities as well), defined the age group that I knew from my testing was responding well and I narrowed down my target audience to only show my social media advert to people who are working as spiritual, holistic and esoteric entrepreneurs. Some examples of this audience included Herbalists, Spiritual Coaches, Chiropractors and Reiki Masters just to mention a few. Before I launched the advert I spent about a week engaging with accounts on Instagram that were using similar hashtags and we were not going crazy following just any account. We were very strategic and selective. Throughout our testing, we quickly realised that content that was featuring my personal stories were performing best so it was a no brainer to use something similar for the paid campaign.

Connect one marketing social media post example

This is what I launched and ran for 7 days with only a €25 budget.

As I have a strong marketing experience behind me, I knew more or less what kind of engagement to expect with such a low budget but it was better than what I anticipated. With paid campaigns on social media, anything around a 3% engagement rate counts as an ok performance, Social Media College backs up this average statistic as well.

My engagement rate was 13% when the campaign finished.

The advert was displayed both on Instagram and Facebook for 7 days. Majority of the engagement (90%) happened on Instagram.

Example of paid social media campaign result

At the end of the week, I reached 14778 accounts on social media including the 7362 people I got through to with the paid post. Ultimately I received much better engagement via DMs as well, connected with likeminded people who also believe that it is our task to raise the collective consciousness and make this Earth a better place. From a business perspective, I have generated quality leads and 30+ real followers (which was not the objective) who genuinely interested in what Connect One Marketing could help them with.

fact #3 social media can be effective

Going back to my initial advice to you: do not allocate all your focus on growing your social media followers, I must add this key fact: having a strategic approach to your social media activity can be very effective when you are looking for new customers for your spiritual business. Understanding who your audience really is will help make better decisions either when you launch a paid campaign or when you are interacting with other accounts.

Don’t measure your success based on how many followers you have but look at the quality of who interacts with you. I have many leads and customers who you wouldn’t find within my followers as we both share the same views when it comes to the social media world. Instead I have personal check-ins with them, they receive newsletters, customised recommendations and they still check out the fresh content on my social account when they feel like instead of just scrolling past them in their newsfeeds.

All in all, use your social presence wisely and most importantly: in an authentic way. People who spend time to reflect and invest in their spiritual development, will not be interested in the illusion world. They want the truth so I encourage you to show them exactly that.

3 killer ideas to increase your clients’ activity

When you already have some clients who are benefiting from your services or products within the spiritual industry, it’s time to ask yourself: how to make an even bigger positive impact? Maybe you’ve helped them feel more realigned, more energised or guided them to unleash their true calling or coached them with their personal development. But how often do they come back to you?

Having returning clients is the ultimate seal of approval that you’re doing something well. Even if you served your customers in a way that they don’t need a follow up, they become your walking advertisement. There are multiple options to maximise the opportunities to not only generate more revenue per customer, but to increase your brand visibility as well. Happy clients equal to a healthy business. I’m sharing 3 killer ideas on how you can increase your clients’ activity to bring you:

✔️ more revenue

✔️ more new customers

✔️ more fulfillment

✔️ much more impact in the word.

Asking for referrals is the simplest yet the most overlooked technique. I’m starting with this one as this is the most powerful tool you can use; forget digital marketing for a second and trust me: word of mouth is still the most effective way to get you leads who are the easiest to convert into paying customers. If you are making a living out of what you’re passionate about then you would be delivering an excellent service to your clients (that doesn’t feel like work), which means that they are having an amazing customer experience and likely to be talking about you already within their network. How can you ask your customers to send you more business without sounding too ‘salesy’? I’m a big believer in the power of personal touch! Reach out to them a few weeks after they purchased your service or product and make your follow up as personal as you can. If you built a rapport with them, use the little details to ask how they’re doing since you last spoke.

For example: “Hey Tom, how are you getting on with the guided meditation I showed you to help you become more focused? What was your biggest success when using the technique?”

Either you are following up with them by phone, email, Whatsapp, Social Media or in person make sure you end your conversation by telling them how grateful you’d be if they shared your details in case they know anyone who could benefit from your service / product. If you are in a position to offer them a freebie in return for the referral, it’s even better. Another great way to maximise referrals is to promote it while they are purchasing /using your service or product. Offering an incentive or discount for them if they bring you more clients will strengthen your market position in a powerful way.

Competition time

It doesn’t matter what your spiritual / esoteric business offers as a service or a product, your clients will love a competition when they can bag something for free. Who doesn’t like the thrill of winning? If you launch your competition with a strategic angle, you’ll not only get your existing customers become more engaged and loyal to you but will have the opportunity to reach new clients as well. I personally always recommend launching a competition that:

✔️ creates value for your existing customers

✔️ has a limited timeframe for the offer

✔️ will give the opportunity to showcase your winner (blog post, interview, podcast, social media feature)

✔️ opens up doors for collaborations

Try to keep track of your competitions and promotions so you’ll have a good idea what works best within your audience. Some of my clients see amazing results when offering flash sales within their competition campaigns and some get better results when there is a physical item to be won.

Customer testimonials

This one probably goes without saying how important it is to have written feedback from your customers. Obviously it’s a great way to boost your credibility and showcase how your spiritual business stands out from your competition, however, it’s also a great tool to get your clients become more active. Remember what I said about referrals?

There are many ways you can feature customer reviews but keep in mind the real reason why you actually want them. Are you a new business and you need to show that you’re the real deal? Are you trying to position yourself in a specific niche in your market? Are you trying to get better visibility within your clients’ network? Having a more structured and strategic approach with your customer reviews will be a huge pay-off in the long-term.

Figure out where you need the biggest boost and direct your clients with their reviews with that goal in mind. If it’s your social media presence that you want to focus on, then ask them to leave reviews on Facebook or get their permission to post their feedback on your Instagram stories. In case you’re a TikTok-er then produce a video of you sharing the lovely reviews. So many options, the key is to remain strategic!

These 3 tips should be starting points when you’re trying to grow and scale-up your spiritual business with authenticity in focus. Getting your customers more engaged, will lead you to an expanded audience, more loyal clients and stronger brand positioning. PODCAST: How to be a leader without feeding the Ego?

Once you are truly committed to following your inner calling and say yes to making a living out of your spiritual / esoteric skills and knowledge, there might be some challenges you’ll have to come through. It’s easy to get sucked into the games of our ego when you are in a leadership position, which I slipped into on multiple occasions while working as a director and CEO and progressed incredibly fast in my career. Leading without feeding the ego was one of the toughest lessons I had to master. Not only I took on a great level of responsibility at a young age but I also had to deal with being a female leader in Malta where the local culture still prefers to accommodate male leaders.

During that time my spiritual development sky-rocketed and as I became more and more conscious about my decisions in life, everything around me started falling into place before falling apart. When your level of consciousness starts shifting, your external world shifts along with it whether you like it or not. It’s definitely not a fun journey at times when you are awakening and becoming more aware of your inner reality.

Listen to this podcast and learn from my experience: the challenges I faced as a female leader and what I would do differently looking back. I’m sharing part of my story of how staying authentic will propel you even forward and why I lost myself while I was a successful CEO at the age of 30. The result? Once I realised I was no longer on the most authentic path, I left it all behind to recalibrate my mind.

Making a bigger impact as an internal drive is what caused the spiritual industry to be born. The more people you will reach, the bigger impact you will be making in society, in your community and in the world. Listen to some tangible advice to figure out how to reach more people with your spiritual business, what an operational plan should include in addition to sharing my own vision why Connect One Marketing was born.

In case you’re wondering what a spiritual business is and what type of activities build up the spiritual industry then find out more about that here.

What is a spiritual business?

Holistic, esoteric and spiritual activities have been emerging as a collective industry in recent years yet we still don’t have a separate industry for these type of spiritual businesses. The market sort of shoves them within the Health & Wellness sector incorrectly. Times have changed and all the energy healers, spiritual coaches and esoteric service providers are in limbo trying to explain in business terms what they do.

There are numerous successful holistic wellness centers, yoga retreats, meditation schools, alternative medicine suppliers, psychic readers, metaphysical teachers and many more ambitious souls out there healing the collective consciousness and guiding people through their spiritual development, yet they still might get a reaction of a raised eyebrow when they explain what their career is about. Turning your spiritual calling, your skills and knowledge into your career is the way forward to start shifting this perception about energy work so we can consciously start calling it what it is: the spiritual industry.

Bright light to show energy and spirituality for spiritual businesses

So what is the Spiritual industry and what does a spiritual business do?

When you think about services and professionals that are helping someone’s spiritual development, you might think that it is a small niche. In reality it is a very broad industry that with time should see its own niches emerging. The spiritual industry has been rapidly growing in recent years and according to BusinessWire just the complementary and alternative medicines segment within the Spiritual industry was valued at $192 billion in 2018 and projected to grow to $271.8 billion by 2024. In the detailed research conducted by Research and Markets, the most in-demand service type that generated the highest revenue was therapy classes with a significant 60% market share in 2018 within Complementary and Alternative Medicines (CAM for short).

What does this mean? Even though that CAM is one of the most popular segments, there are still so many additional activities that fall within the Spiritual industry. If I had to define it in very simple terms, then

any professional who makes a living from working with energy could fit into this category. In addition to businesses who are providing supplies to these professionals.

SMEs, freelancers, startups and established large organisations all function well within the spiritual industry which has been growing rapidly in recent years and it is projected to keep expanding. Throughout my market research I identified that people have been searching more online about the collective consciousness, personal development, spiritual awakening, enlightenment, kundalini awakening, energy work and chakra healing just to mention a few most searched topics. However, a surprising fact for me was to find out that one of the top keywords that was driving traffic to websites related to spiritual development was: depression. People who are going through difficult times are looking for answers within and they are seeking meaning. They are looking for alternative ways to develop themselves, to change their mindset and seeking for personal development tools they are likely to stumble across spiritual development as well.

As an energy worker, spiritual coach, a ligthworker or a shaman (doesn’t matter what your guiding role is), your main duty is to help raising awareness and help raising the collective consciousness. You came here for a reason, with a clear mission and your task is now to help others remember theirs. To contribute to paving way for the spiritual industry and get it acknowledged in our world, here’s a short list of activities, professionals and services that make up this unique sector:

  • Meditation guide
  • Mindfulness teacher
  • Past life regression hypnotist
  • Holistic therapist
  • Yoga teacher and retreats
  • Energy healer
  • Reiki healer
  • Tarot reader
  • Crystal healer
  • Astrology forecasts
  • Chakra balancing
  • Lightworkers
  • Mediumship and clairvoyance
  • Life activation
  • Initiation
  • Naturopathy
  • Herbalist
  • Psychic reader
  • Alternative medicine supplier
  • Shamans
  • Magnetic Resonance Therapy
  • Ayurvedic treatments and therapies
  • Spiritual life coach
  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractor
  • Magick workshops
  • Metaphysical teachings
  • Akashic records guides
  • Lucid dreaming and astral travel
  • Numerologist

This list can go on and on and with time we will see sub-categories emerging within the Spiritual industry. It is an exciting time to be living in to see how more and more souls are waking up and following their inner calling as their careers.

How to get started?

Esoteric, holistic and spiritual service providers are playing a key role in changing our world, raising our collective consciousness and healing humanity. Either by supplying books, meditation aids, yoga mats, crystals to customers and businesses or providing spiritual guidance to clients by coaching them, teaching them or healing them. These professionals might find it challenging how to explain what they do in business terms and the “traditional” business world might not realise that there is a broad industry out there focusing on spiritual work. If you are unsure how to turn your spiritual skills and knowledge into your career to start your own business, then you might find this comprehensive guide useful to get you started: THE COLLECTIVE GUIDE OF HOW TO TURN YOUR SPIRITUAL CALLING INTO YOUR CAREER.

Why aren’t we?

How COVID-19 lock downs have similar effects on our mental health as being locked up?

“As long as your mind is free, your spirit is strong.”

This was the sentence that made my mind shift back into positivity during these strange times we are experiencing globally right now. This simple yet powerful advice came from someone who spent a substantial amount of time in confinement, most of it in a maximum security prison.

As much as I’m committed to provide you with business and marketing advice for your spiritual business, I’m also passionate about sharing tips on how to stay positive. I felt it’s vital to show our situation from a different perspective and decided to talk to an ex convict to understand how being in lockdown compares mentally to being locked up. I asked him to share his experience in light of our current situation and by sharing some of his story, maybe we can find some answers how to cope. He also reminds us that even though we are quarantined we still have small liberties; we have technology and the internet to entertain ourselves, to keep our minds occupied and to stay connected to our loved ones.

We might be physically confined but the most important thing is: not to be confined mentally. Having some of our freedom suddenly being taken away from us can definitely take its toll on our mental health. I wondered how this compares to being incarcerated?

Breaking free of a limiting mindset. Mental health

Does this COVID-19 lock down have similar effects on our mental health as being locked up?

I decided to ask this from someone, let’s call him Diego, who had spent a significant amount of time in confinement, majority of it being in a maximum security prison. Since he finished his sentence, he started a new life and left his old ways behind him to appreciate the second chance that life threw him.

I was curious to find out two things:

  1. What advice can he give to people during these times to keep our mind strong and healthy?

  2. What is that one thing he learnt to appreciate when he got his freedom back?

First thing that became very quickly clear to me was that no, our current lock down is not even half as bad as being completely deprived from all the important things in life: speaking to our loved ones, having our meals when we want to, being able to go for that walk to the supermarket whenever we need to. Being able to open our front door when we feel like, that freedom of movement we still have to take care of our essential needs.

As Diego explains, most people have never been confined of their freedom so it’s a lot harder to deal with it as compared to someone who has been conditioned from a young age and became prepared for it mentally. Also someone who is more of a social, extrovert character, who needs regular social interaction in life, can find this situation even more challenging than how it really is. So as a side note, think about those people in your lives who are extroverts and maybe give them a call a few times in these coming weeks.

Listen to a short yet meaningful snippet of our interview with Diego
“We can communicate with people and look for emotional support”

It was interesting to hear some of Diego’s tips on how he kept his mind sane while also improving on his own self-development during his time in confinement. For us, during our quarantines these tips and advice can come in useful especially if you feel like that your mental state and emotions are already going through a roller coaster. For me personally, it definitely has been the case and I’m only on my 10th (or 11th?) day of our lock down here in Barcelona.

Shining light to symbolize power of mental health and positive thinking

You will need to train yourself to have some self-discipline.

Introducing a new routine, a new schedule will give you some certainty during these uncertain times. It creates a structure in your mind.

To stay mentally strong:

“I practised a lot of discipline, I meditated, I worked out. You have to make a schedule right around your circumstances. What you create is a program, you’re programming yourself.”

“I used to be a very disciplined individual to withstand and outlast my conditions of confinement. I read a lot and the books that I read were the tools for me to be able to withstand anything mentally.”

How your mindset effects your physical health:

“Of course, none of us like to be confined but it’s either you remain strong mentally or you don’t but then you break mentally. And then you end up having all these other mental handicaps that could probably lead you to your demise. Anxiety, is one of the main ones and from anxiety you will build panic attacks and from panic attacks it could lead to health conditions.

Once your mental state is broken and your spirit is done then your physical well-being will go after it.”

Meditating figure in light to show importance of mental health

Learning to appreciate what’s important in life:

“What I appreciate in life is the small things, the joys. Health, freedom, those are the things to me that mean the most. Family, love. Everything else can come and go. Money comes and goes, success comes and goes but as long as you have what you stand on, what you believe in, and at the end of the day you have the ones that you love and then you love yourself, that’s what matters the most.”

“During our last conversation when we met for a coffee, I told you how grateful I am and how I’m not in the pursuit so much of being successful financially. Because I’m so grateful being free. I was disciplined and confined for so long and I even confined myself in a way of restricting myself of pleasure. I would do that purposely to become strong mentally. Like I would fast or would limit myself from being able to eat things like chocolate and stuff like that, that could bring small joys. Because if you don’t have something, you don’t want something then you don’t miss it”

I wondered by facing all these restrictions to our freedom through this lock down, has triggered any past traumas for him. Has it brought back some of those negatives memories, emotions or flashbacks?

“So far, I’m dealing with it quite well, it hasn’t triggered anything but then again I’ve been out of that situation for quite a long time. And I understand that this is for my own well-being and for humanity as well. Being a caring person, I don’t want to put other people at risk or myself at risk so you know, I have to be a law abiding citizen.”

If someone who had spent a tremendous amount of time being locked up in prison can understand how important it is to stay at home and complies with the lock down rules, then so can you. You really have no excuse.

How are we shifting collectively during these challenging times?

How ironic is that we feel more connected to humanity by being isolated from one another? The little things in life that we took for granted now really teach us their true value. A walk along the beach or in the park, the hugs from your loved ones living abroad, the excitement of planning a weekend getaway. It never crossed our minds that these could be luxuries.

It’s only been 7 days for me since I’ve been in complete lock down and the first few days were actually a bliss like for so many of you as well probably. We could enjoy a bit of calmness in the madness, especially if we live in a city that usually would be bursting with life. For me, that’s Barcelona. But all we see now is empty streets and we started to recognise some familiar faces on the balconies across the street from us. We started waving over to those people during our morning coffees or throwing them a smile while another neighbour is entertaining us with some music to keep our spirits up. Or when we are clapping in unison at 20:00 sharp every evening to show our gratitude to all the incredible people working around the clock in health care, trying their best to safe as many lives as possible.

But as soon as we retreat from our balconies or windows, we are left with our own realities. Either you are sharing your 24 hours inside those walls with your family or living completely alone, it does take a toll on your mental state. It stirs your soul up. It makes you question everything in your life, all of your priorities, all of your time you have been dedicating to something.

Does any of that truly matter?
What are those moments that now you realise that you honestly cherish? What are those little life-snippets that make you feel that are creating some kind of value, some kind of meaning?

You start reaching out to people you haven’t talked to for a while, you start reading those books that have been collecting dust on the shelves, you start opening that expensive bottle of wine you’ve been saving up for a special occasion. You suddenly start expressing gratitude to those people that connected with you and showed you something positive, that taught you something meaningful, that stood by you during your darkest days.

This global quarantine is no longer about just putting people into isolation who might be infected with this coronavirus / COVID-19 whatever you want to call it. We are creating a whole different meaning to that state, what this quarantine really means and what it brings out of us.

I see the light and positivity in all this devastating times. I see people reconnecting with themselves, I see people telling their close ones how much they love them, I see people being more compassionate, more helpful, more humane. I see people trying their best to form communities, to strengthen their existing tribes, to care for each other. We needed to be isolated, quarantined to feel more connected than ever before. That’s the biggest quarantine irony and it is the best way to experience this together. Not in fear, not in worrying and not panicking. But by being there for each other, keep lifting each other up, shining a bit of happiness in others’ lives whenever we can.

I encourage all of you to use this strange time to become more connected. We are in this together and remember, this is temporary. It will pass and once we are on the other side, we will have a much different community, society and overall system. We will rebuild our economies together but most importantly we will rebuild ourselves together. We are all one. This is the time to really put that into practice.

So keep smiling at your neighbours, keep entertaining people around you, keep that light shining.

PODCAST: The toughest things to admit are admitting things to yourself

I have recently been invited to feature on The Fit Fun Podcast, run by the zestful high-performance mindset coach and branding expert, Fatima K and her co-host the resilient founder of Fit-budd, Mateo Melichar, coaching clients into success physically and mentally with his holistic approach.

I’m truly passionate about collaborating and sharing knowledge so I immediately said yes to this opportunity to share my story, how I went from being a CEO to living in a jungle in Sri Lanka and arriving at Barcelona starting Connect One Marketing.

We chatted about how to go through challenges in all areas of your life by shifting your mindset, the importance of following your gut feeling and why it is important to make your passion into your source of income.

“The toughest things to admit are admitting things to yourself.
To restart; but the more you do it, the easier it becomes. You don’t have to be stuck, you don’t have to be keep on doing just the same thing over and over again. You have the power to change whatever you want. It is scary as hell. Is it easy? No! But is it worth it? Hell yes. So be brave.”

Just a heads-up, as we are covering many important topics with Mateo, press play when you have 40 minutes available to yourself to really benefit from our tips and guidance.
